GoPoPs: Acronym for glass on painting on paper.
GoPoPs was born after a personal loss in conjunction with experimentation with water media and the fascination and I developed for the delicate organic stains that can be created on paper when water touches ink. Early on this series manifested to be organic, non figurative, peaceful and surprisingly to me, somewhat joyous. GoPoPs were there, expressing themselves every day, transferring my emotions into glass drops and water based washed depictions as I slowly went through a grieving process. After all, glass is a liquid in solid form, conforming an adequate representation.
In this body of work all the sub-components are far from formalist arrangements and away from classic techniques, it is free spirited. GoPoPs came from emotion channeling inner states directly into paper, partly in a form of automatic impulse or a subconscious act, wishing they could take me through the sate of mind I was in and hopefully walk me out of it. I find the name GoPoPs cheerful and I think suits the initial purpose. A personal challenge began to create unconventional shapes in simplicity, focusing mainly on the placement of water, color, dabs and glass. Initially rooted in the Colour Field painting where colour is freed from objectives being the subject in itself, gradually that concept got pushed in a personal way, through an investigation of a contemporary process.
GoPoPs evolved taking many shapes becoming mixed hybrids of abstraction and representation. The series keeps slowly growing after nearly 500 paintings with more than 2500 glass pieces hand-cut, lamp worked and or fused by me.
